Even when the sun isn’t shining on Summerland (rare, to be honest), it sparkles. From the top of Giant’s Head Mountain to Sun Oka Beach, the city is wrapped in 360-degree beauty. It’s a town that oozes nostalgia, where everyone knows their neighbour’s name and weekly visits to the local candy store, Summerland Sweets, are the norm. Despite its modest size, a wave of new amenities has popped up in Summerland, offering modern comforts while still preserving its old-fashioned charm.

The accommodations here are reason enough to visit (the views from many are jaw-dropping). While vacation rentals have their appeal, nothing compares to the comfort of a proper hotel stay. Summerland Waterfront Resort Hotel, set along the shores of Okanagan Lake, offers a perfect mix of accommodations for solo travellers, couples, and families—complete with a kids’ club. One stay here and you’ll see why it’s a favourite for annual family getaways. Attached to the resort, Shaughnessy’s Cove dishes out addictive meals (don’t miss Wing Wednesdays!), lakeside views, and friendly service.
Beyond the comfort of your stay, Summerland has many delicious options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between. Part of the fun of staying in a new city is eating like the locals, right?! Start your day with superb coffee and pastries at The Beanery on Main Street. Crick Coffee is a short drive away, ideal for a relaxed morning in the middle of nature. While Granny’s Summerland is not to be missed either; it’s a delightful spot featuring a farm store loaded with local products on one side and a charming cafe on the other, serving up the best soup and sandwiches—made with homemade bread—and pies acclaimed as the best in the Okanagan.

For a hearty meal, head to Zia’s Greek Restaurant, a rustic farmhouse offering a taste of Greece right in the heart of Summerland. Giant’s Head Pub provides a fun atmosphere for traditional fixings and excellent beer. Or for a distinct South Okanagan dining experience, explore one of the local wineries (and there are plenty of them!)
Summerland is home to the famous Bottleneck Drive; orchards, vineyards, and farms line the winding roads, making the trip unforgettable (warning, you’ll want to stop and take a photo every 5 seconds). Along this strip you’ll find 19 wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries to discover and fall in love with.

Yet, beyond the award-winning wineries, Summerland caters extensively to those who love the outdoors. With numerous mountain biking and hiking trails and abundant water sports (rent sea-doos, kayaks, and stand up paddles at Summerland Resort) adventure is always at your doorstep.
If you’re a history buff, you have to visit the Kettle Valley Steam Train. Hop aboard the historic train for a scenic ride (kiddos welcome and are always so enthralled) or attend one of their events, like their murder mystery dinners (you’ll feel like you’re in an Agatha Christie novel).

For something on the sweeter side of history, visit Summerland Sweets, a candy shop beloved for its house-made syrups from Okanagan fruit, fruit jelly candies, and nut brittle—established in 1962! And of course, before you leave, make sure to stroll down Main Street to purchase a cherished memento of your time in Summerland. Whether it’s at The Carousel Collective, a vintage store housing nine different vendors, the whimsical Frilly Lilly Home, or the bustling Farmer’s Market on Sundays, you’re sure to find something special to bring home.
